The Last Gasp of Summer

This has been a great summer, my best summer in recent memory, but I am ready for it to be over.  I am ready for a new season.

It is still brutally hot here, but I can tell summer is on its last legs.  Autumn is just around the corner, waiting to make a misty entrance.  The corn in the field that was bright green just a few weeks ago has been dried into golden stalks by the unrelenting sun.

I can’t remember the last time we had a good rainstorm here, and nothing but hot sunny skies are in the forecast for the next ten days, but I can feel it.  It is almost time for chilly mornings and leaves crunching underfoot instead of dead grass.  Summer turns to fall almost instantly around here.  One day you are complaining of the heat, and the next day you wake up to a chill on your skin.  It is wonderful.  I think that day is coming very soon.

There are a lot of things I am going to miss about the summer, like the days that last until 9pm and the cute summer clothes, but most of all I am going to miss the evening walks when it is still warm and the sun is setting behind the hills.

Every time I go out for a walk I find hundreds of little snails clustered on leaves and plant stalks like this.  They look like flowers perched on top of their stem.  I have never seen this before this summer, but I don’t think they will be doing this come autumn.  I will miss these guys, but there is always next summer!
