Snails In My Garden

I have become a little obsessed with my herb garden.

I just added some strawberry plants, two small citrus trees, more mint, an aloe vera plant, and a bonsai tree.

I also decided to create a lasagna garden in my small patch of yard behind the house.  Once it gets going, I will move my strawberry plants out back and eventually add some veggies.  Pictures of the whole mess will be forthcoming.

Warning: I have no idea what I am doing so this could get ugly.

During my hunting/gathering expedition for “green material” to start the lasagna garden I found a whole bunch of snails in my yard.

I thought I only had one little guy that liked to hang out by my front door, but I have an entire colony living under my ivy plants.

I can’t stand slugs, but I think snails are adorable.  Makes me feel kind of like a jerk.

  1. Snails are slugs with a shell and they do the same amount of damage!

Careful there…they LOVE basil and will consume the entire plant overnight if they can get to it. I know only from experience!
    Good luck with your gardening!

Thanks Dana! For the life of me I can’t keep my basil plants alive, those snails don’t even have a chance to get to them!

Ugh ok you had me at cute but tasty? And seriously DAMAGE control honey on the cutey pies or all your dear gardening will not be on YOUR table. I have what I like to call a brown thumb, I don’t need help killing my garden by those little hungry guys. Your garden looks like its taking off!

They may look cute but they will munch their way through your garden the moment you’re not looking!

    • Erica says:

I read somewhere that broken egg shells around your plants work because snails don’t want to climb over them. Have you ever heard that?

      • Rubarbs says:

I’ve tried that, to no avail! I try to keep on top of them by picking them off, putting them in a pot and giving them to my Dad for the thrushes in his garden, they love them!

      • Erica says:

I don’t want to hurt the snails, but if they start eating my plants, all bets are off!

      • Rubarbs says:

They will eat your plants, and usually your favourite ones! I’ve given my Dad another jam jar full for his thrushes this afternoon. That way I’m not poisoning them but the thrushes get a good meal!
